With more shops and eateries re-opening every day, Wimbledon Town Centre is springing back to life and is ready to welcome you back!
The time has come to truly #LoveLocal. Love Wimbledon has been working hard to ensure that you can safely shop again around town, with many of Wimbledon’s fabulous stores and eateries ready to re-open, serving you with great products and dishes once again!
We have:
Set up ‘What’s Open’ pages for a one-stop overview of the shops and restaurants open in town
Undertaken a deep clean of the town centre
Installed contactless public hand sanitiser stations on The Piazza and outside Wimbledon Station
Provided funky pavement vinyls to help you keep socially-distanced in queues
Brightened up the streets with floral hanging baskets and giant planters (kindly donated by the All England Lawn and Tennis Club)
Installed colourful lamppost and railing banners
Created vibrant concrete barriers outside the New Wimbledon Theatre (with help of Firecrackers Works and Merton Council)
Hosted the successful return of the Monthly Local Market on The Piazza (adapted for Covid-19) with delectable delights being offered by local traders. The perfect place to pick up fresh bead, delicious bakes or hot treats. You can also order and collect from many of the stalls in advance, to help make your trip into Wimbledon even easier.
Both Centre Courtand Elys will be opening their doors again on Monday 15th June with advanced measures to ensure you have a safe shopping experience. Many other shops and restaurants are set to re-open to so look out for our ‘We’re Open’ sign in their shop windows.
The last few months have been difficult for many, particularly owners of small, independent businesses in our town. This is the time to #LoveLocal, so we encourage you to pop in and visit these businesses, remembering that this is a greener option than shopping and ordering online!
Several local businesses have adapted incredibly well to the current pandemic, developing unique ideas to continue to provide you with their products/services via delivery, click and collect, and more (all contactless of course).
You can travel into Wimbledon safely, by walking or cycling in, and making use of the 250+ cycle racks availablein the town centre.

If there was ever a time to demonstrate the strength of a community, that time would be now.
We’ve seen a tremendous effort from businesses supporting local and wider initiatives, recognising the importance of their role in the community. Their resilience and ability to quickly transform in the face of uncertainty has contributed to building stronger bonds to Wimbledon Town Centre.
We know there are many heroes and we’ve highlighted just a few examples of Wimbledon-based businesses doing incredible work to make a difference in our community and beyond.
Repurposing Facilities to Combat Covid-19
With a global shortage of hand sanitiser, Coty, one of the largest global beauty companies, repurposed their factories in the UK, USA and Monaco to produce hand sanitising gel, distributing products free of charge to medical and emergency staff. Donations are expected to reach tens of thousands each week.
Firecracker Works, an event production company, adapted their facilities to manufacture PPE for the NHS, Healthcare and Frontline workers, with a target of producing 30,000 face visors.
Leading food packaging manufacturer, RAP, turned over its production line to manufacture disposable face shields, with an ambitious goal of delivering between seven and ten million a week.
Supporting the NHS and Other Organisations
Domestic & General partnered with Salute the NHS, a group of leading businesses including Tesco, Yodel, Absolute Taste, Leeways and British Army, Team Rubicon UK, to serve 1 million nutritious meals to key frontline NHS workers over the next three months.
Icon Solutions, a payment and enterprise solutions provider in the finance sector, generously contributed to Wimbledon Guild’s Covid-19 fund to enable them to continue to support the most vulnerable people in our community.
The Alexandra Pub alone has made over 4,000 meals for the NHS, whilst Lush donated bath bombs to NHS staff working on the frontline, Elys supplied Easter Eggs to NHS workers and textiles to Ricards Lodge to be made into kit washing bags whilst Wilko donated toiletries and cleaning products to the Dons Local Action Group.
A big thank you to the Town Centre’s supermarkets, Morrisons, Tesco, Little Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s who have all made significant contributions and the countless cafes, restaurants and food shops who have provided discounts or priority shopping hours to NHS staff and vulnerable people.
All of these efforts signify hope and community spirit and a testament that together we will weather the storm and come out stronger on the other side.

Your favourite pub, restaurant, cafe and shop need your help!
Thousands of businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sector lie above the current rateable value threshold to access the £25,000 grant.
Love Wimbledon is supporting a national campaign, #RaiseTheBar, which believes access to the £25,000 grant is the difference between survival and bankruptcy for businesses on High Streets across the country. The grant will enable businesses to mitigate significant challenges relating to stock losses, cashflow and rent. Many businesses are not in a position to take on further debt or have serious misgivings about being able to survive the recovery and service loans. Other cash pressures include suppliers, service charges and the cost of re-opening to repurchase stock and ongoing running costs.
By increasing the threshold from £51,00 to £150,000 an additional 180 businesses in Wimbledon would be supported, representing 5,600 jobs and around 30% of the employment in the town.

‘It’s Oh So Quiet’ is new wall art installation in Wimbledon Town Centre, created by Love Wimbledon, in collaboration with artist Louis Masai and local photographer and culture campaigner Cindy Sasha. This piece aims to raise awareness of the decline of British birds in London, particularly the House Sparrow, renowned for its birdsong and seen as a vital part of urban life.
Brought to life by a London-based artist, often best known for his dynamic and inspiring wall murals of endangered animals, ‘It’s Oh So Quiet’ features a male house sparrow and female house sparrow inferring the question of ‘where has the sparrow song gone’. Based on the hit single ‘It’s Oh So Quiet’ by Icelandic musician Björk, the art reflects how birdsong has reduced over time, due to the population decline of this bird species.
The disappearance of birdsong could have a profound impact on human health. The natural sounds of birdsong have been linked to improved mental and emotional health amongst humans. Hearing birdsong allows us to connect with the natural world and can be the perfect antidote to the pressures of modern life.
According to The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), there is a severe decline in the UK house sparrow population, estimated as dropping by 71 per cent since 1977. This has led to the RSPB now red-listing House Sparrows as a species of high conservation concern.
Rather than adopting the newer patchwork style, seen in much of Louis Masai’s more recent work, the artist drew on a more realistic, older style of painting to embody the central message of this piece – the critical situation facing British birdlife. Louis Masai is a London-based painter, sculptor and street artist, who uses his art in the form of murals, paintings and installations to highlight and initiate discussion surrounding climate change, endangerment of species, conservation and species equality.
Wimbledon has seen a renaissance in cultural experiences ranging from music, theatres, art galleries and literary festivals. It is a place where there is often more than what meets the eye. As said by Cindy Sasha, “street art can change a landscape of a town centre. I love it when the love spreads through art and sends such a positive message – we need more of it!”. Love Wimbledon create and fund a variety of cultural and environmental notions including the first rainbow pedestrian crossing in the UK, in partnership with Merton Council, to show support to the LGBTQ community in Wimbledon Town Centre.
