Love Wimbledon pedestrianised part of Wimbledon Broadway on Sunday to welcome Christmas to Wimbledon with their Wimbledon Winter Wonderland spectacular. Over twenty thousand visitors were treated to stage acts, Christmas market stalls, street entertainment, children’s rides and a spectacular firework display.
Hundreds of young Frozen fans took to The Broadway dressed top to toe in their princess dresses to sing along with characters ‘Elsa and Anna’ from the much loved Disney film at 1pm. Cinderella from New Wimbledon Theatre’s Christmas pantomime also appeared on stage and giant stilt walking snowmen, fairies and dancing penguins brought the magic of Christmas to Wimbledon.
With the Mayor of Merton officially opening the event at 12pm, stage acts including The Enlights, Singswell, Gemini dancers, The Colourhouse Theatre and Morden Primary School kept gatherers entertained with festive fun and Christmas songs. Children’s rides including a carousel, rodeo reindeer and a Christmas pudding bouncy castle, gave plenty to keep children happily entertained.
Family photos took place within a giant snow globe and market stalls sold festive presents and foods, mulled wine and roasted chestnuts, as well as a popcorn stand and candyfloss. Elys department store got into the Christmas spirit also with festive activity and entertainment on every floor. Centre Court Shopping’s spectacular firework display lit up the skies, ending the day on a magical note.
Love Wimbledon BID Manager Helen Clark Bell commented, ‘We had many children dressed up as Anna and Elsa to join in with the songs and get into the Christmas spirit. The event is increasingly popular and Elys and Centre Court laid on lots of activities as well, including face painting, carol signing and Make a Wish initiative, complimenting the larger event on The Piazza and The Broadway. This year we had over 30 Merton businesses and organisations take part in this annual festive event.’
