Improvements On Hartfield Walk

Hartfield Walk was created in 2021 with Community Infrastructure Levy funding from Merton Council, as a pilot site to see whether creating a street food hub, with planting and seating, could successfully improve and animate what was previously an austere concrete cut-through from The Broadway to the Morrisons car park.

Having reviewed the site’s usage since the site launched, and spoken to customers and kiosk traders alike, we are confident that redeveloping Hartfield Walk has been broadly successful, and we should retain the site. However, there are some issues that do need to be rectified with the site, and most pressingly we need to replace some of the materials used for the pilot, in particular the chipboard used in the archway and seating structures are damp and no longer weatherproofed and need to be urgently replaced.

Love Wimbledon is working with a specialist hard landscaping company, with the support of Merton Council and in consultation with local residents, ward councillors and the kiosk tenants to improve the site. Over the next couple of months, significant changes will be made to the seating areas, the archway and the overall look and feel of the site, with the priority to ensure it is weatherproof before the winter period begins.

Work begins on Saturday 27 September, with some immediate remedial and investigative work at the front of Hartfield Road, to understand what can be re-used from the current structures, and what needs to be replaced. We will provide a further update following this investigative work regarding the next phase of improvements.
