Sustainable September 2023

What a fantastic Sustainable September!

We had an exciting range of activities and events in town, including fashion shows and talks, our new sustainable market, behind-the-scenes tours, workshops, clothes swap, repair café and the opportunity to meet The Wombles, our original eco-warriors.

In addition to these activities, we updated our reuse and recycling pages on our website for everyday household items, from electrical items to ink cartridges and even plastic toys, could be recycled in town. We wanted to encourage people to think about their local charity shops and think about how to keep items in circulation.

We had a colour walk celebration to launch the beginning of Wimbledon Sustainable Fashion Week on The Piazza, everyone came in their best glam, check them out here. Go Inspire’s fashion shows provided an unforgettable experience in embracing an eco-friendly approach to fashion with a bold theme of ‘The Rewear Revolution’.

We hosted a unique marketplace exclusively focused on sustainability. The Piazza came alive with independent, local artisans offering a diverse range of products, including organic and natural skincare, handmade clothing and accessories, and unique items like pre-loved skiwear. Plus, we had locally grown mushrooms and honey sourced from Centre Court’s rooftop farm.

We also had two exclusive tours this September. Wimbledonians were invited to explore the rooftop urban farm at Centre Court Shopping, gaining insights into the cultivation of mushrooms and the production of honey from on-site bees.

A rare behind the scenes tour of Wimbledon’s iconic Polka Theatre was also available. We heard about the history of the children’s theatre, the recent building transformations, and the theatre’s ongoing efforts to improve its environmental impact. See a snapshot of the behind the scenes here.

Go Inspire’s free clothes swap returned to Centre Court Shopping, with a new upcycling workshop with master upcycler and influencer Dani Dawkins. See how we transformed our bags at the workshop here.

Abundance Wimbledon held their annual Fruit Day at St Mark’s Church. This fun-filled day had amazing, featured stalls selling homemade jams, cakes and chutneys that were all made with surplus fruit picked locally. There was also plenty of fun activities for ages and live music to keep everyone entertained.
