Just before the Wimbledon Championships every year, Love Wimbledon arranges three overnight cleaning sessions of the major pavement areas that visitors will use navigating from the town centre to the All England Club. However, the combination of the extra use of our pavements from Wimbledon and during major World Cup matches, plus the long period in which we saw no rain at all in SW19, has left our pavements looking very dirty.
As Merton Council confirmed they did not have any resource availability to arrange an urgent clean of the town centre’s pavements, Love Wimbledon has stepped in, and funded an additional 3 nights of pavement jetwashing from our graffiti removal partner, Community Clean Infrastructure Services (CCIS). This was booked at the beginning of August, but such was the demand nationally for their services that the earliest CCIS could attend was the first week in September.
Hopefully, anyone using Wimble Town Centre’s pavements in the last few days has seen the transformation to several of our major pathways. In total, over 1,500 square metres of pavement were jet washed over the three-night period, bringing much of Wimbledon’s York Stone paving back to its distinctive yellow colour again.
As part of our business plan for our forthcoming ballot, Love Wimbledon is pledging to increase the regularity of our deep pavement cleans in the town centre from once a year to once a quarter, to ensure we can help to keep the town centre looking this way.
