Going Greener
As a Business Improvement District, we are keen to support businesses in their sustainability journey, both with their operations, their waste, their procurement and their own emissions. We also encourage businesses to reduce their single-use plastics, sign up to the Refill app for free water refills and engage with their staff on what’s important to them when it comes to greening and sustainability.

The agenda for sustainability is far reaching
Proud to be the heart of Merton – the 6th greenest borough in this great city – we still think there is more to be done. Working with Sustainable Merton and Surfers Against Sewage we dream of making Wimbledon plastic free. It’s a tall order, but with national pressure from government and local persuasion we know our businesses are open to change and customers can do their bit too!
Being Responsible
As a business, we look wherever possible to reduce our environmental impact. Whether this is through managing a single-use plastic free market or using local businesses as suppliers, we ensure we have sustainability on our agenda within all our planning.
We are proud to say that our Monthly Markets on The Piazza are single-use plastic free! All our stall holders are doing their bit for the environment and are committed to our pledge. We have a new ‘Wimbledon Market Bag’ made with sustainable fabric so when customers spend £20 or over at a stall they receive a FREE market bag.
The Refill App
Water UK’s national scheme, the Refill App, is helping to keep Britain hydrated and prevent plastic pollution by offering the public free tap-water-refills. Many of our BID businesses have joined the water refill scheme and are Refill Champions which we’re proud to promote. Put your ‘tap on the map’ as they say and get involved in this initiative joining local businesses:
Sustainable Merton
Sustainable Merton are on a mission to clean up Merton’s air, tackle food poverty and reduce the consumption of energy and resources across the borough. Love Wimbledon works with Sustainable Merton to partner with local businesses to inspire them to operate more sustainably and provide them with the tools in which to do so. We have also supported their #InTheLoop recycling trial, which has seen the installation of new recycling bins to the streets of Wimbledon, encouraging ‘on-the-go’ recycling of plastic bottles and cans.
Business Champions
Sustainable Merton are building an ever-growing team of local Business Champions. These businesses are behind the #PlasticFreeMerton campaign having switched from single-use plastic options to non-plastic alternatives and making a positive, united difference to be more sustainable. With their knowledge, experience and enthusiasm we have the power to influence real change here in Merton to make our borough more sustainable now and for the future.
